How to choose your mushroom-based dietary supplements wisely

Once reserved for a circle of initiates and traditional Asian medicines, adaptogenic mushrooms are now making their way into our wellness routines. Faced with an exploding market, an important question arises: how to navigate it?   At French Mush, we fundamentally believe that education is the key to responsible and informed consumption.

An informed consumer is one who can make a choice that truly serves their health. That's why we decided to provide you with a comprehensive guide in which you will discover the essential criteria to consider before investing in dietary supplements for your well-being.

Criterion No. 1: The part of the mushroom used (Fruiting Body vs. Mycelium)

This is undoubtedly the most fundamental starting point, yet it is often overlooked. A mushroom consists of two distinct parts: the mycelium, which is its underground root network, and the fruiting body (or fruiting body), which is the visible part we identify as the mushroom itself.

It is in this fruiting body that the highest concentrations of the sought-after bioactive compounds are found, such as beta-glucans and triterpenes (below).

    ⚠️ Glossary point

The beta-glucans are natural soluble fibers found in certain medicinal mushrooms that boost the immune system, regulate cholesterol, and promote intestinal health.

The triterpenes are bioactive compounds found in plants and mushrooms. They have recognized anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties.

However, a large part of the supplements found on the market are made from "mycelium on grain" (MOG). The process involves growing the mycelium on a cereal substrate (rice, oats, etc.). The problem? The final product is never separated from the grain. You end up with a powder containing mostly cereal starch and very little active mycelium, which considerably dilutes the product's effectiveness.

In reality, a high-quality supplement must be made from 100% fruiting body. This is the guarantee of optimal concentration in active molecules. Some excellent products can combine the fruiting body with pure mycelium, cultivated separately and not on grain. At French Mush, we prioritize as much as possible the use of the fruiting body for most of our extracts, as this is where the true power of the mushroom lies.

Criterion No. 2: Raw powder or concentrated extract? The question of bioavailability

Once the question of raw material is clarified, another dilemma arises: should one opt for a simple dried mushroom powder or an extract? The answer is unequivocal for those seeking effectiveness. Mushroom cells are protected by a rigid wall composed of chitin (the same substance that makes up the shell of insects). The human stomach does not have the enzymes necessary to effectively break down chitin. Consuming a raw powder, therefore, means leaving a large part of the precious bioactive compounds trapped and inaccessible to your body.

Extraction is the key process that allows breaking this chitin wall and making the active molecules bioavailable. Thus, we recommend prioritizing concentrated extracts because they offer you better bioavailability of the active compounds present.

This ensures that your body can truly absorb and use the benefits of the mushroom. At French Mush, we go even further by using cutting-edge technology: ultrasonic-assisted gentle extraction. In reality, although water extraction is very common, it does not preserve as many benefits as sound extraction. This innovative process allows the breaking of chitin while preserving the integrity of the most fragile molecules. This guarantees you a 92% bioavailability and maximum efficiency, far superior to traditional methods.

Criterion No. 3: Traceability and origin, a guarantee of purity

Do you know where the adaptogenic mushrooms you consume come from? This question is far from trivial. Mushrooms are true "biological sponges": they absorb everything in their growing environment, both good and bad. Mushrooms grown in polluted areas can be loaded with heavy metals, pesticides, and other contaminants.

Unfortunately, a large part of the global market is flooded with products of dubious origin, without any traceability. A product that does not clearly mention its origin should immediately arouse your suspicion.

Therefore, it will be necessary to prioritize products from a clear and controlled origin. Ideally, a certified organic culture, which guarantees the absence of synthetic pesticides and GMOs. At French Mush, we have chosen primarily European sourcing, with suppliers always certified organic. Our Shiitake, for example, comes from the pure forests of Finland. This approach allows us to have total control over the production chain and to guarantee you products of impeccable purity, free from any contaminants.

Criterion No. 4: Transparency of analyses (COA and Active Content)

This is where perhaps the most revealing criterion of a brand's commitment comes into play: transparency. A serious brand has nothing to hide. It must be able to prove the quality and safety of its products through independent laboratory analyses.

Do not hesitate to ask for the Certificate of Analysis (COA). This document must confirm the absence of heavy metals, microbes, and pesticides. But more importantly, a quality product must mention the percentage of key active compounds, notably beta-glucans. A label that merely lists "Reishi Powder" without specifying its concentration in actives is a red flag. It's like buying a car without knowing the engine's power.

We recommend turning to a brand that guarantees you a precise titration of active compounds on its packaging. At French Mush, transparency is a non-negotiable criterion. Each product sheet on our site provides access to the corresponding certificate of analysis, and we clearly indicate the concentration of our extracts so you know exactly what you are consuming.

Criterion No. 5: Certifications, markers of trust

In a poorly regulated market, certifications and labels are beacons that guide the consumer. They are not just marketing arguments, but proof of a commitment to strict standards, validated by third-party organizations.

    What to look for:

Organic certification (AB logo or Euroleaf): This is the minimum standard to ensure environmentally friendly cultivation and your health.

Vegan and Gluten-Free labels: They ensure that the product is suitable for specific dietary regimes.

Other certifications: As far as we are concerned, in addition to the Gluten-Free and Allergen-Free formula, we also have the No Added Sugars formula and the HACCP certification from our main supplier.

At French Mush, our entire range is certified Organic Agriculture, vegan, and additive-free. For us, this is the foundation of a healthy and trustworthy product.
